Artistic Nude Photography - How to Take Good Female Forms

By Tobias Sterling

It is highly generalized that the female form is more beautiful to look at than a males. The most common reasons cited for this opinion include the fact that a woman's body features curves while a man's body is more muscular. In addition, the male body is usually perceived as more 'functional'. If you combine these opinions with the fact that throughout history most artists have been male, you can plainly see the reason for female nude photography in art rather than male.

What makes a quality nude female photograph? There are three main principals.

1 - It should be interesting, not vulgar to look at

Nude photography is synonymous with that branch of photography known as fine art. Fine art photography can be defined as photography created for no other purpose than because it is interesting to look at. As such, nude female photography is about presenting the female form in a way that is interesting. In order to make an interesting image, nude female photography tends to favor black-and-white images that are full of light, shadow, shape, and contrast. They are usually carefully composed and lit in order to achieve this.

2 - It should be anonymous

Female nude photography is not about the person in the photo, but rather showcasing the example of a category; the category being women's bodies. This is extremely different from portrait photography as that categories goal is to showcase the person or their personality. Nude photography is about the form in general which is why most photos hide the face of the subject.

3 - It should be non-sexual

While the popular consensus is that any heterosexual male would love to view photos of naked women all day, nude photography is an art form. There is a difference between erotic photography and the art of nude photography. Nude photography is a way to display the female form in an interesting way while erotic photography is used to titillate or arouse the viewer. The difference may be slight, however the intent is what is important.

Due to the fact that everyone's perception of what is considered sexual and non-sexual is different, most nude photographers place the female genitals in shadows or dark areas. This is done to keep the focus on the art that is trying to be depicted. Nude photography is another way for artists to display the beauty of differences in nature.
