Vertical Jump Training Workout Principles

By Amit Rosman

Whether you want to start your jumping training due to sports or that cool video on YouTube, you can do so with a specific set of principles. The first thing to understand is you don't just spring off your feet from some powerful leg movement. If you truly want to get the most from your jumping abilities, then it starts by powering your jumps from the core of your body (the torso). This means your arms, legs, and feet are all important as well.

Understanding this principle however, is not enough. Not even close. Often, a lack of knowledge of correct principles is made even worse by lack of knowledge of proper techniques. Usually, one does not follow the other. In a lot of cases, coaches and trainers who may have nailed down the principles accurately demonstrate the wrong technique in actual jumping training. Besides not being able to deliver on the promised increase in vertical jump height, this exposes an athlete to the risk of serious knee injury.

One thing that everyone should know is that men and women need to take a different approach to their jumping training. Since our bodies are different, it means our positioning will be off as well. Women may think that watching a man's approach is incorrect and vice versa, but the truth is they have to be. It's just important to remember that you should both have the proper technique so there aren't any knee injuries that surface in the near future. We recommend reminding your coaches or trainers of this as well.

Long story short, the best way to utilize your jumping training is by taking a scientific approach. While focusing on your core and positioning is important, it's also necessary to look further into the other areas. Whether it's the anatomy, the safety, any nutritional strategies or anything else, they should all be covered. A lack of knowledge here is a quick way to making mistakes or even getting hurt.

We understand that some athletes are just gifted, but you also need hard work to give yourself the best opportunity. Just look at all the legendary athletes out there, the one thing they have or had in common was they worked hard to be the best. Having this mind set ahead of time will give you a leg up on your competition. While natural talent is great, it's those who fine tune it that become great. The skies the limit, but it all depends on you.

Going back to our earlier statement, don't forget that your jumping training starts with learning about how to get strength from your core. Once you hone in on these skills, you'll be able to watch others and realize they don't have the same training. They'll be focusing in on their legs and ankles instead of the torso.

In the end, always remember to warm-up and stretch. It's probably the most important part of your regimen because it gets the juices flowing. Without it, you are more susceptible to injury and several setbacks shortly thereafter. We can think of any sport that doesn't have some sort of warm-up. Uh, we don't consider poker a sport, it's a strategical game.

When you're ready to get started, focus on the ab area. Do a few simple ab exercises and work on toning up your mid section. You're going to need a healthy set of these in order to build real strength from the torso. It's the key to building the best body you can through jumping training.
